Chiapas: CCIODH Announces VI Observation Visit

On Monday, February 4th, the International Commission for the Observation of Human Rights (CCIODH) gave a press conference to announce its VI Observation Visit in San Cristóbal de las Casas, Chiapas.

Made up of 51 people from ten different countries, the CCIODH will be in Chiapas from February 2nd through the 9th interviewing all actors involved in the conflict in order to build upon three reports written in 1998, 1999, and 2002 (respectively) that focused on human rights violations in the area.

The motivations for this visit include the aftermath of the massacre in Acteal, conflicts of land and territory, visits to various jails in the state, the situation of the displaced, and the continuing denouncement of paramilitary activity.

The committee’s headquarters will be in the Hotel Jardines del Carmen C/ Igancio Allende 22, in the barrio of San Antonio in San Cristóbal de las Casas. All persons, organizations, or institutions that wish to give testimonies will be received at this location.

On February 2nd, a delegation from the CCIODH was interviewed in Tuxtla Gutiérrez along with the governor of the state, Juan Sabines, and his entourage.

The CCIODH has divided into different subgroups that will travel around the state, visit Zapatista municipalities, indigenous communities that are in conflict, and municipal officials.
