Chiapas: new mobilizations against feminicide and the murder of Iztel

On 14 June, new protests were held against feminicide and the murder of Itzel Janet Méndez Pérez in the Cathedral Plaza in San Cristóbal de Las Casas. Some 150 people commemorated the two months that have passed since her death.  Although recently two presumed suspects have been arrested, her relatives and those in solidarity have demanded that authorities confirm their responsibility in accordance with the law and that, once this be confirmed, a sentence be handed down in accordance with the classification that feminicide carries in Chiapas.

The pronunciation read during the event notes that “SADLY, THE IMPUNITY THAT ACCOMPANIES ALL THESE CRIMES PERPETRATED IN THIS CITY, ESPECIALLY WHEN THE VICTIM IS A FEMALE AND THE CAUSE IS RAPE OR ANOTHER TYPE OF SEXUAL AGGRESSION, THIS INHIBITS THE SATISFACTION IN LIGHT OF THE APPARENT CLARIFICATION OF THIS CRIME AND IT RAISES OUR ALARM.  UNFORTUNATELY, THE OFTEN-ESTABLISHED INCOMPETENCE, INEPTITUDE, AND NEGLIGENCE OF THE AUTHORITIES IN THE RESOLUTION OF THE CRIMES OF VIOLENCE AGIANST WOMEN HAS ACCUSTOMED US TO SKEPTICISM.”
