Mexico: MPJD commemorates the anniversary of its victims in Cuernavaca

On 28 March, one year after the murder of Juan Francisco, son of the poet Javier Sicilia, together with six others, members of the Movement for Peace with Justice and Dignity (MPJD) warned that the violence being generated by organized crime not only has not ceased but rather has increased, and that impunity persists in the majority of cases: “The country goes for the worse; the increase in violence has been felt very severely in territorial terms, and it has grown terribly in many places,” noted Rocato Bablot, in a press-conference as spokesperson for the MPJD.

In Cuernavaca, Morelos, the MPJD held a day “Of pain, rage, and love” to commemorate the first anniversary, which began with a symbolic act for peace and the victims.  Javier Sicilia was present at the space where he initiated the event of commemoration for victims at which activists and artists of different styles dyed the water fountain red near the monument to peace.  A cascade adjacent to the monument which is considered the principal entryway to Cuernavaca was similarly dyed.  Other artists carried out a performance to represent the executions that have been suffered in the state.  Julián Lebarón arrived at the event, confirming his departure from the Movement; nonetheless he said he would be present at the march because he felt affinities with the victims, even if he does not support the methods of struggle that have produced few results to date.

Regarding the elections of July, Sicilia declared that “though we are only a few months from the vote, I will continue with my posture to submit a blank ballot.”
