On 29 December 2012, in the Ikojts community of San Dionisio del Mar, there were seen confrontations between opponents and supporters of the planned construction of a wind-energy park as advanced by the Spanish firm Mareña Renewables in this municipality having to do with the carrying-out of an assembly to which opponents were blocked access. 12 people were injured in these conflict.
In accordance with journalistic information, the community president of San Dionisio del Mar reported that “in assembly,” 400 communards had supported the construction of the wind-energy park, ratifying the 2004 convention made with Mareña Renewables, beyond having agreed to ignore the court ruling released in early December which ordered the suspension of the project. For his part, Rodrigo Peñaloza Flores, spokesperson for the Assembly of Indigenous Peoples of the Tehuantepec Isthmus (APIITDTyT), indicated that due to the violent acts “there was neither assembly nor agreements,” adding that the opponents will present audio-visual and photographic evidence to support the claimed “nonexistence” of the event. He indicated that the site was surrounded for three days by state police, who allowed the entrance of a shock-group which provoked a violent and unstable atmosphere in the locality. In a communique, the state government affirmed that it had ordered agents of the state police to the community toward the end of creating conditions for the execution of the assembly.
