Chiapas: Careful, patriarchy kills! Presentation of the “Campaign against violence against women and femicide in Chiapas”

images“To report and build the consciousness of the people with regards to the origin and risks of this type of violence, as well as to promote change gender relations” are some of the objectives that were exposed on 23 September by around 20 civil women’s groups in San Cristóbal de las Casas, Chiapas, during the presentation of the “Campaign against violence against women and femicide in Chiapas.”

During the course of the presentation of the campaign, and as one of the actions that makes up this campaign, there was made a call for the federal government to release a gender alert for Chiapas, given the increased number of femicides seen in the state, a statistic that since the year 2010 has increased by 400%.  A gender alert would serve “as a legal mechanism to reject and denounce all the manifestations of violence against women and to demand that the State observe its obligations as a guarantee of the human rights of women.”

The campaign alludes to different social actors who are related to the perpetuation of this type of violence, including women, attackers, State, and people in general.  To reject such violence, guarantee the security of women, put an end to the impunity in which these crimes continue, as well as to provide evidence, denounce, and not reproduce such violence, constitute some of the basic premises which must be implemented.
