The Fray Bartolomé de Las Casas Center for Human Rights (CDHFBC, better known as Frayba) published a bulletin reporting a break-in at the home of Julio César Ortega Oseguera, volunteer at the Indigenous Center for Comprehensive Training- University of the Earth Chiapas (CIDECI – Unitierra Chiapas), and part of the support team of the Sixth Commission of the Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN).

The CDHFBC reported that, on December 14, four plainclothes individuals violently entered the house where his 24-year-old son was at the time, and who was beaten, tied up and questioned about his father, Julio César. The attackers said that they had been paid to kill him and were looking for him for this reason. Having searched the whole house and stealing some items of little value, the men left.

In addition, they reported that, “During the last three months they have broken into Julio César’s vehicle on various occasions, without taking anything of great value, just ransacking his belongings inside. He has also been subject to surveillance and been followed on a number of occasions by different people in suspicious-looking vehicles, some of them without license plates.”

The CDHFBC demanded “from the Mexican government the immediate cessation of the harassment, surveillance and attacks against human rights activists regarding the case in question, as well as the fulfillment of respect for and guarantee of human rights; that the deeds outlined be thoroughly investigated, and that those responsible be brought to justice; and that right to integrity and personal security of Julio César, his son César Ivan and his family be guaranteed.” It also reiterated its “solidarity with the volunteers of CIDECI – Unitierra Chiapas, with Julio César and his son César Ivan, and we ask the adherents to the Sixth Declaration of the Lacandon Jungle to be alert to the harassment and attacks that they have been receiving recently, and also that national and international solidarity [groups] to be aware of what we report here.”
