Chiapas: Violence Against Women Continues

The Popular Campaign against Violence against Women and Femicide in Chiapas, composed of more than 20 organizations and individuals, issued a bulletin on February 14, the day of love and friendship, to draw attention to the situation of violence against women and the “negligence of the accomplice authorities in the face of femicides” in the state.

In the bulletin, it recalled that, “on November 18, 2016, the Gender Violence Alert was declared for 23 municipalities in the state of Chiapas, 17 of which correspond to the Altos region. The reason was the existence of a marked femicidal context that disturbs social peace, that is to say we women are killed, raped, beaten and the authorities do not act to prevent, eradicate and punish violence against women.”

Using one example, it proposed that this measure is still insufficient. “In January of this year Mariano Gomez Garcia (indigenous Tseltal) was released after being held for one year in pre-trial detention, accused of the femicide of Manuela Santiz Gomez. The reason for his freedom: violation of due process. And like this case, we have documented other cases where the inconsistencies of the Office of the Prosecutor are creating opportunities for defence of murderers and aggressors of women to go unpunished. (…) due to the incompetence of public servants, the justice apparatus created to guarantee the exercise of rights, has become an accomplice to impunity.”

They therefore again demanded “Punish those responsible for femicide and femicidal violence, Guarantee the rights of victims who have been beaten; sanction public officials and civil servants who, because of their incompetence or negligence, have generated impunity towards femicides and aggressors of women. “
