Chiapas: No to Mining Press Conference

On September 26th, in Tuxtla Gutierrez, the press conference of the Committee for the Promotion and Defense of Life Samuel Ruiz de Chicomuselo and the Fray Bartolome de Las Casas Center for Human Rights took place. Both organizations denounced that, “the reactivation of the mining companies in that region of the Sierra Madre, increased division, harassment and risk of confrontation among their settlers in communities.”

During the press conference they also mentioned: “the expulsion of a dozen peasants from the Ricardo Flores Magon community for not allowing mining companies to pass through that community.” In addition to the expulsion, the ejidatarios participating in the watch work to prevent mining companies from entering their communities were threatened with death. Likewise, they recalled that in 2009, Mariano Abarca Roblero, was killed in the municipality for opposing mining.

In Chicomuselo, 12 mining concessions are in effect until 2059. According to Proceso magazine: “The only brake on the entrepreneurs, who have the extraction concessions, is that they still have not obtain the permission of the population living in the zone that is going to be affected. That is why they seek to inhibit the opposition that comes from the communities.”

The Samuel Ruiz Committee for the Promotion and Defense of Life requested from the Mexican State: “the urgent intervention of the Agrarian Attorney’s Office in defense of the rights of ejidatarios and the definitive cancellation of mining concessions; as well as to protect and safeguard the physical integrity of the defenders of land and territory” in the municipality of Chicomuselo.
