On April 18th, the “Caravan of the Forgotten”, formed by 500 members of the General Coordination of the Isthmus of Oaxaca Victims (CGDI in its Spanish acronym) arrived in Huajuapan de Leon, Oaxaca, where Mixtec communities joined the caravan.

Page3 reported that the “inhabitants of Matias Romero, Ixtepec, Ixtaltepec, El Espinal, Juchitan, Hidalgo Union, San Mateo del Mar, Tehuantepec and other municipalities in this region demanded from the federal government a complete census of the affected people and not a simulation as they did a couple of weeks ago when they only took into account eight municipalities of the 41 affected.” In addition to that seven months after the earthquakes on September 7th and 23rd, the CDGI registers 16,000 affected people, who “demand help from the authorities and that to date, (…), have been unable to rebuild their homes.”

Omar Esparza, leader of the Zapatista Indigenous Agrarian Movement (MAIZ in its Spanish acronym), declared that, “the caravan is also a denunciation against corruption, political conditioning and the lack of commitment and capacity on the part of the state government to take on its responsibility.”

The destination of the caravan is Mexico City (CDMX) where, according to EDUCA, “they will meet their peers and participate in the march they will make from the Angel of Independence to the Ministry of the Interior (SEGOB in its Spanish acronym).”
