National: Mothers of the Disappeared March for Mother’s Day

On May 10, Mother’s Day, mothers of disappeared marched in various cities of Coahuila, Chihuahua, Zacatecas, Sinaloa, Nayarit, Michoacan, Morelos and Veracruz to demand that the authorities expedite the search for their absent relatives, the identification of remains located in clandestine graves and, in general, that progress be made in the investigations to clarify each case.

In Mexico City, 29 of the 50 groups of relatives that make up the Movement for Our Disappeared marched together. They demanded the “real and effective participation” of the families in the cases created by the General Law on the Forced Disappearance of Persons and Individuals that came into force in January of this year. They denounced that the families of victims are seen “as the enemy to be eliminated” as well as the attacks on organizations that have accompanied them in their search, as has recently occurred with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (UNCHR), “which is dedicated to the defense and promotion of human rights in Mexico, always on the side of truth and justice.” Present at the event, Jan Jara, head of the UNCHR expressed solidarity with the mothers and emphasized that, “these portraits, these faces that we can see, speak of an enormous human tragedy.” He promised that the UNCHR will continue to work alongside them “from all their capacities, in the search and so that neither one more mother nor one family should go through this terrible pain.”
