On October 6th, to commemorate its 24th anniversary, the Tlachinollan Mountain Center for Human Rights presented its annual report “Mountain: Spring of Resistance, Whirlwind of Hope” after a mass celebrated in the cathedral of Tlapa de Comonfort. “This report is the history of the struggles of the people of Guerrero, of the families that fight every day for justice in every corner of this state,” said Abel Barrera, director of the Center.
In the event, parents of the 43 students of Ayotzinapa, members of the Council of Ejidos and Opposition Communities to La Parota Dam (CECOP) and the Regional Coordinator of Community Authorities – Community Police (CRAC-PC in its Spanish acronym), relatives of the activist Antonio Vivar Diaz, who was killed in this city, among other people and groups accompanied by the Center were present. There were also representatives of the UNCHHR and the National Commission for Human Rights (CNDH in its Spanish acronym), Senator Emilio Alvarez Icaza, and members of civil and social organizations.
There was also a march through Tlapa streets demanding respect for the rights of indigenous peoples, an end to harassment and criminalization, among other demands.
According to Abel Barrera, as reported by Proceso, “The contribution of Tlachinollan – which in Nahuatl means the burned fields – is that it managed to fight in court the rights of indigenous peoples, both in cases of serious violations of human rights, as well as in the defense of social, economic and cultural rights, as well as in the defense of the territory”. He acknowledged to this also means that the main challenges for Tlachinollan are in the defense of the indigenous territory and in reaching the truth in the Ayotzinapa case “for investigation with scientific evidence, taking into account the context of macro-criminality, the victims and that international supervision is maintained. This is an issue that puts this new administration to the test.”
