Protest in San Cristobal (@SIPAZ)
On January 7th, activists, friends and relatives of the human rights defender, Sinar Corzo Esquinca, murdered in the city of Arriaga on the 3rd of this month, carried out demonstrations in Arriaga and San Cristobal de Las Casas in homage to his work. They denounced that it is not yet known who were the material and intellectual authors of the crime, although they stated that they were convinced that the motive had to do with his social activism that had led to confrontations with local politicians on more than one occasion. They demanded justice for the crime echoing the demands of the Office in Mexico of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (UNHCHR), the National Commission of Human Rights (CNDH in its Spanish acronym) and hundreds of civil organizations that defend human rights in Chiapas and other states of the country.
“The pain for us is very strong. It is something inadmissible, incredible and implausible that we still live in a condition of oppression and repression and that it is with the life of our compañeros that this misfortune that Chiapas is now living is being paid for”, said Alejandro Alarcon Zapata, a friend of the activist.
A few days later, the Attorney General of Justice of Chiapas, Jorge Luis Llaven assured that “all lines of investigation are open” in the case. He added that “I cannot provide information, but there are important advances.”
