On July 2nd, the media reported that the Second District Court of Federal Criminal Proceedings in the State of Mexico is under an internal investigation for possible acts of corruption after it ordered the release of Jose Angel Casarrubias Salgado, alias ‘El Mochomo’, implicated in the case of the forced disappearance of the 43 students from the Ayotzinapa Normal Rural School in Iguala in 2014.
“We were presented with a report that there was corruption in the court that ordered the release and there is evidence; that is, there was money involved. Then, they will act punishing those responsible”, said President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador.
The release of Jose Angel Casarrubias Salgado on July 1st, allegedly due to lack of evidence, was followed by his immediate rearrest when he left the Altiplano maximum security prison, in Almoloya de Juarez, Mexico State, by an order of presentation by the Federal Public Ministry of the Prosecutor’s Office Specialized in Organized Crime Investigation (SEIDO).
Before the release and subsequent rearrest of Casarrubias, the organizations that have accompanied the families of the 43 in the search for truth and justice called on the Attorney General of the Republic (FGR) to “perfect the accusations against him using all the evidence available and the Federal Judicial Branch to act with strict adherence to the law in order not to reward the impunity that prevails in the case.” They stated that “in order to seriously transcend the so-called “historical truth’, new processes with legal evidence are needed and, above all, finding the real whereabouts of the student teachers.”
