National: CSOs and Individuals Ask AMLO to Cancel Planned Decree on Glyphosate and GMOs

@La Coperacha

In a letter published on October 28th, more than 200 civil and social organizations, as well as individuals committed to defending the environment, urged President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador (AMLO) to cancel a draft presidential decree sent by Julio Scherer Ibarra and Victor Villalobos Arambula, respective heads of the Legal Counsel of the National Executive and of the Secretariat of Agriculture (SADER). They denounced that said decree “violates the principles of transformation that emanates from their government, contradicts their statements, promises and convictions to ‘ban transgenic corn’, to progressively ban the use of the herbicide glyphosate, and violates the objectives of achieving self-sufficiency and sovereignty food of our country.”

This being the case, they urged the president to “put national interests above private interests and reject the decree proposal” recognizing that “we are facing the historic opportunity to initiate a process of transformation in the countryside and the country, through a new agri-food and nutritional model that ensures the right of Mexicans to produce and consume healthy food, and leave behind a predatory model.”
