National: Senate Approves Escazu Agreement

Chiapas @Sipaz.

On November 5th, the Mexican Senate unanimously approved the ratification of the Escazu Agreement that seeks to guarantee the fundamental rights of access to information, citizen participation and access to justice in environmental matters.

It is an international instrument signed in Escazu, Costa Rica, on March 4th, 2018 by 24 countries. With Mexico’s approval, the 11 ratifications necessary for the agreement to come into force are reached, which will occur 90 days after this country lodges said instrument with the UN.

“The ratification of the Agreement is very important for Mexico because it establishes provisions regarding the generation, dissemination and access to environmental information and addresses the generation of a safe and conducive environment for human rights defenders in environmental matters.” The United Nations released a statement in which the representatives in Mexico of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) and the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (UNHCHR) celebrate the approval of the Senate.
