On January 7th, the Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT) published the Environmental Impact Report (EIR) in its regional form for the construction of the Southern Bypass, a highway that will connect the Tlacolula Valley with the “superhighway” that connects to the Federal District.
The publication is made almost a decade after the “Coordinator of Peoples in Defense of Territory” that consists of several communities in the central valleys of the state of Oaxaca, opposed the project.
The highway will have an extension of 67.5 km and will be built with an investment of approximately 4.74 billion pesos, and will affect approximately 21 municipalities belonging to the region of the central valleys of Oaxaca.
