National: CNI against Megaprojects and Militarization

On January 28th, after the end of its fifth assembly, the National Indigenous Congress (CNI) and the Indigenous Government Council (CIG) published a statement in which they denounced that the COVID-19 pandemic has served the federal government for “the imposition of megaprojects and the militarization of the country”, in addition to “contributing to the war of extermination against our peoples, where health services and economic capacity are very scarce and in many cases non-existent.”

They declared that “the lying words of Lopez Obrador and his so-called fourth transformation seek to create a wall that hides the war that is raging against the peoples and the life of Mother Earth, wanting to isolate us and present ourselves as opponents of progress, something of which the other governments were already accusing us, but today it takes on a more destructive meaning.”

They claimed that “all the force of capital, the State and organized crime is on our peoples, dividing us, dispossessing us, threatening us, imprisoning us, murdering us.”

They highlighted in particular that in the case of the Front of Peoples in Defense of Land and Water in Morelos, Puebla, Tlaxcala, “we are experiencing the same megaproject war that our brothers and sisters are living throughout the country. The Comprehensive Death Project called the Morelos Comprehensive Project is imposed to mainly benefit mining companies, over and above the legality, ignoring and violating injunction resources, employing the National Guard to carry out the construction of the aqueduct and the imposition of indigenous consultations that violate our fundamental rights.”

They announced that “however, the attack by big capital and the government, and the murder of Samir, does not end our resistance, on the contrary, we will continue fighting until life triumphs over death, with our most powerful weapons: dignity, resistance and rebellion.”
