On February 10th, various organizations issued a declaration of alert over the possible offensive of the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) with the support of the National Guard, which they point out, has committed abuses in different towns of Oaxaca, Veracruz and Chiapas against communities which have joined the movement in resistance to high rates and poor service from the company.
The inability to pay the excessive electricity rates for many families in extreme poverty has caused the CFE to enter the communities to cut the electricity service and along with it water. Such is the case of Cerro Grande and Reforma Agraria Integral, communities in the municipality of San Francisco Ixhuatan, on the Isthmus of Tehuantepec on February 8th, which prompted members of the civil association Union of Indigenous Communities of the Northern Zone of the Isthmus, UCIZONI, to take over the facilities of the Federal Electricity Commission in the city of Matias Romero in demand of the reconnection of services.
The Civil Resistance committee, through its president, said that the situation is worrying and outrageous since the company is violating agreements with the Federal Government and the Secretary of Energy. Also, the role of the National Guard which is acting with violence and aggression towards people “who have to sacrifice their standard of living to be able to pay a very high electricity bill.”
“It is also outrageous the looting that there is of the natural elements of the Isthmus area, of the wealth that are the winds, which are taken advantage of by private companies that do not pay taxes, which have bribed authorities to continue growing […], they have also been lent to the CFE to build the infrastructure […] at no cost to the private sector, […] it is looting, it is dispossession and it is a way of squandering, irresponsibly, the nation’s wealth”, the Committee stated.
