On February 20th, community authorities from 17 towns in five municipalities of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec announced in a meeting that the modernization works of the railroad are suspended in the northern zone of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. They reported that they do not agree with the construction of the Interoceanic Corridor when the voices of the communities were not taken into account in the consultations that were carried out in 2019, failing to comply with the criteria that should characterize a free, prior and informed consultation according to ILO Convention 169 ratified by Mexico.
On another note, they indicated that due to the lack of permission to rehabilitate the railways, they expelled the workers from the area, and they will not allow their entry.
