Chiapas/National/International: INM and Officials Denounced for Harassment of Migrant Defenders

In a letter dated April 28th addressed to Mary Lawlor, Special Rapporteur on the Situation of Human Rights Defenders of the UN, the Collective for the Observation and Monitoring of Human Rights in Southeast Mexico requested her urgent action “to guarantee conditions of security and dignity in the work of promotion and defense of human rights that we as a Collective carry out.”

This is “due to the fact that recently the human rights defenders that make up this Collective have seen our work to accompany migrants and people in need of international protection hampered, as well as constant harassment by federal authorities and different security forces and the military, which has escalated to the criminalization of our work.”

The organizations that make up the group detailed that the authorities in charge of the administration of the Border as well as agents of the National Migration Institute have “repeatedly denied them access to the border”, assuming “a confrontational and violent attitude”, calling for presence of police and military bodies and taking “photographs without our consent.”

“The harassment and blockade of the accompaniment work that the organizations, in addition to violating the right of individuals, groups and communities to defend human rights, has negative impacts on the life, security and dignity of migrants and people in need of international protection, who do not have adequate and sufficient information about their procedures, generates fear and uncertainty about their life plans and in most cases, the rejection of the refugee procedure in Mexico, family separation under arbitrary criteria and other violations of human rights that also constitute various and repeated violations of International Humanitarian Law”, they denounced.
