On June 7th, in the context of the third anniversary of the femicide of Maria del Sol Cruz Jarquin in Oaxaca, the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights defenders, Mary Lawlor, asked the Mexican authorities to guarantee the safety of the victim’s mother, the journalist Soledad Jarquin Edgar.
“With great sadness once again I call for the safety of Soledad Jarquin who fights for justice and accountability for the murder of her daughter Maria del Sol”, Lawlor said in a video on her social networks.
The call was made days after the “Trialogue Mexico, European Union and Civil Society”, a space on human rights between representatives of the Secretariat of Foreign Relations of the Mexican Government, representatives of the European Service for Foreign Action and the Delegation of the European Union in Mexico, as well as representatives of Mexican and European civil society, a framework in which this emblematic case was alerted.
“We know that Mexico is a very dangerous place for those who fight for justice and that Oaxaca is an especially risky place in Mexico for human rights defenders and in particular for women defenders”, said the UN Special Rapporteur, before committing to continue to address these issues with the Mexican authorities both publicly and privately.
