In his morning conference on June 15th, the President of the Republic, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador announced that in the three years that remain of his mandate, he will present three constitutional reforms in Electrical, Electoral and Security matters.
The first on the electrical reform is to strengthen the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) and it would be presented this year or at the beginning of next, while the other two; the electoral one that is to assure independence in the elections and eliminate legislators by the multinominal route; and the security one that is to incorporate the National Guard (NG) into SEDENA will be presented by 2023, said the president.
“We are going to reform the Law and Constitution so that there is full democracy, also if the legislators do not want it, as Benito Juarez said, nothing by force, everything by reason”, the president said about the second reform and explained that he wants the Guard to Nacional to continue to consolidate and “we do not want it to be passed on to Government afterwards and in six years it will be ruined. In due course I am going to propose that it be part of SEDENA, as the Air Force is, a branch because I also do not want to be left with the responsibility of not having proposed the things that I consider are good for the country.”
The day after the announcement, deputies from the Workers’ Party (PT), a party traditionally allied with Morena, expressed their disagreement with the last two reforms, recalling that, when the NG was created, there was a commitment to return the Army to the barracks by 2024.
