On June 19th and 20th, SIPAZ accompanied peoples and collectives from the Tehuantepec Isthmus, organized as “The Isthmus Is Ours”, which held a solidarity meeting in the Biniza (Zapotec) community of Puente Madera, Oaxaca. Together with state and national allies, they expressed their rejection of the Tehuantepec Isthmus Corredor and Interoceanic Train Development Program and declared that “the Isthmus is not negotiated.” The megaproject of the federal government plans, in addition to the rehabilitation of the railways and the remodeling of the port of Salina Cruz, the construction of six development poles or industrial parks, projects that, the participants raised, were not previously consulted, free and informed.

The attendees denounced that the federal government uses the right to Indigenous Consultation as “an instrument for the dispossession of the territories.” The meeting was organized by Members of the Assembly of Peoples in Defense of the Land and Territory, with the aim of analyzing “the onslaught of the patriarchal capitalist system and its megaprojects throughout the country.”

The municipal agent of Puente Madera, David Sanchez, denounced the arbitrariness that exists around the negotiation and allocation of land for the construction of the industrial park in the municipality of San Blas Atempa. “We do not want our Mount El Pitayal to be affected, it is a life-giving space, from there we extract our firewood and also rich pitayas, the authorities say that they are salty lands, but they are our lands, that is why we call for them to be kept from appropriation”, says Maria Magdalena Cortes Melendez.
