Oaxaca/National: “Indigenism, Violence and Dispossession”: Neoliberal Harassment on Tehuantepec Isthmus

@ SIPAZ

On June 22nd, the book “Indigenism, Violence and Dispossession”, written by various authors was launched. This work is a series of essays on the Mexican panorama, the government and its relationship with indigenous peoples, that is, the systematization of public data but above all of the voices of indigenous inhabitants of the Tehuantepec Isthmus who have been silenced.

During the presentation, the most recent cases of murders of community defenders were discussed, for example Tomas Rojo, leader and spokesman of the Yaqui people whose remains were found in a grave a few days ago in the north of the country. However, the San Mateo del Mar massacre, which occurred a year ago and where 15 people were murdered, was also recalled, which was reduced to a “conflict between communities” but which is, along with other massacres on the Isthmus, linked to the implementation of megaprojects in the region.

Diana Manzo, originally from Union Hidalgo and one of the authors of the book, said that in the Isthmus there are a series of questions about the projects and a historical memory of what has happened with the indigenous communities, a fusion of the conflicts of Oaxaca with those that exist at the national level.

For his part, Francisco Lopez Barcenas said that “there is a reality with indigenous peoples that is not seen and what is seen is what they invent for us” and that they try to make visible, such as the fact that the times that the Mexican Air Force has used its weapons it has been against indigenous peoples.

Luis Hernandez Navarro, writer and journalist, said that the book presents the hopes that were born with the election of AMLO and the deterioration of that discourse to become a government of welfare, clientelism and that does not recognize the autonomy of the peoples or their rights. In addition, from the perspective of the three years that remain of the current government and the consequences of the Trans-Isthmus Corridor, “an anticipation of the conflicts that will arise especially in Oaxaca and the rest of the Southeast.”
