Oaxaca: Indigenous Peoples Denounce Mining Projects

Members of the Chatino, Chinanteco, Chontal, Mazatec, Mixtec, Triqui and Zapotec peoples gathered at the Assembly of Resistances and Rebellions on June 19th in El Rebollero, Cuatro Venados municipality, Oaxaca, denounced the 355 mining concessions issued up to 2021 in a statement.

The concessions to extract gold, silver and iron in El Rebollero (six thousand hectares), in San Jose del Progreso (of 64 thousand hectares) and in the Sierra Sur (120 thousand hectares) have been given to the Cuzcatlan, Zapotitlan 1 and Altos Hornos de Mexico companies, among others.

They also denounced the attacks by armed groups in the community of San Pablo Cuatro Venados that “through acts of violence seek to deprive us of our territory and give way to the exploitation phase of the mining concessions.” In addition, they denounced six hydroelectric projects in the Sierra Sur and in the Cajonos River (Chinantla region) and nine in the La Lana River.

Furthermore, they indicated the Sierra Mazateca as a region that is on high alert due to the presence of paramilitary organizations that function as the armed wing of certain political parties in the region.

Similarly, they pointed out that the entire state of Oaxaca, like the rest of the country, is undergoing a process of territorial reorganization through land regularization programs such as PROCEDE, FANAR, RAJA, which also affect natural protected and conservation areas, where communal statutes are frequently invalidated. They highlighted the case of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, where several communities that initially accepted wind projects have entered agrarian conflicts.

Finally, they demanded that the arrest warrants against “four compañeros who have resisted the imposition of an industrial park in the community of Puente Madera, San Blas Atempa” be revoked, as well as the harassment of those who “resist the imposition of megaprojects in Oaxaca and in the rest of the country.”
