At the end of July, newspapers and organizations published lists of human rights defenders killed during the current six-year term of office, although the figures are not identical.
On July 30th, the organization Educa Oaxaca published a list with the names of all the human rights defenders who were murdered between December 1st, 2018 and July 30th, 2021 and the issues they defended. There were 91 defenders killed. It clarifies that this figure does not include journalists and activists who were not claimed as defenders.
On the other hand, on July 12th, the Protection Mechanism for Human Rights Defenders and Journalists, through the Ministry of the Interior, reported 68 human rights defenders and 43 journalists murdered during the government of President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador. The President himself, although he regretted those killed, questioned the figures that the Mechanism presented, and ordered the undersecretary of Human Rights, Alejandro Encinas, to issue a report on the matter.
Although the government’s list shows a lower figure than Educa Oaxca’s, Mexico continues to be one of the most dangerous countries for defenders and journalists, ranking fourth globally among the most lethal countries for defenders and the country most dangerous for journalists in the Western Hemisphere.
