National: Leader of Guerreros Unidos Extradited

@Borderlandbeat

On August 22nd, the Attorney General’s Office (FGR) extradited Edgar Pineda Celis to the United States, as requested by the Federal Court of the Northern District of Georgia, to be prosecuted for the crimes of criminal association and against health.

Edgar Pineda, alias “El Chato”, alleged leader of the criminal group Guerreros Unidos, is identified as responsible for coordinating the importation and distribution of drugs to the United States of America. The investigations indicated that “the detainee was the link between Guerreros Unidos and the Jalisco New Generation Cartel to facilitate the transport of cocaine, heroin and methamphetamines through the national territory to the northern border.”

Pineda was arrested on April 18th, 2020 in Bacalar, Quintana Roo, in possession of cocaine, and upon confirming his identity it was found that he had open investigations by the DEA. Consequently, “he was admitted to the Southern Prison of Mexico City pending the completion of the procedures for his extradition. However, he filed an injunction, and even achieved a provisional suspension last December, which delayed, but could not prevent, his handover to the American justice.”
