Nine families, members of the Las Abejas Civil Society Organization, returned to Pantelho on August 26th after being displaced for more than a month due to the political-social conflict.

The families left their homes due to the violence after the local elections, which, along with other issues, sparked the emergence of the Self-Defense Group of the People “El Machete”, and took refuge in the community of Acteal and in San Cristobal de Las Casas.

The group was received at the entrance of the town, where they have their homes, and after the welcoming ceremony, the parish priest of Pantelho, Miguel de Alba, officiated a mass in the hermitage located on that site.

In their letter Las Abejas state: “We respectfully ask the Municipal Council of Pantelho together with its 86 communities, for the peaceful and respectful coexistence with our fellow members of Las Abejas de Acteal, both with the families that today return and with those who live in the communities of: Aurora Esquipulas, Nuevo San Carlos, Chitam Uk’um, San Jose del Carmen and Guadalupe (this last community also belongs to the Nuevo Paraiso community where they currently have their coffee plantations and little houses), all from the municipality of Pantelho.”

“Finally, we want to infinitely thank the women and men of good heart, who unconditionally brought food, clothing, medicine and joy to the displaced who are returning today; without your big heart, the suffering would have been much more difficult for the displaced, and know that that humanitarian act that you showed us, we will never forget”, their statement concludes.
