At dawn on Sunday, August 5th, members of the migrant caravan were attacked by some 200 uniformed members of the National Guard (GN) and the National Migration Institute (INM) in the town of Huixtla, Chiapas, where they had spent the night. .
The GN and INM patrols entered violently, causing the migrants to flee to rural roads, nearby streets, the river or the hills. This caused the separation of several families.
The action was witnessed by members of civil organizations that make up the Collective for the Observation and Monitoring of Human Rights in Southeast Mexico, who documented arbitrary detentions, without adherence to basic protocols, and particularly the systematic detention of accompanied children and the separation of families as a strategy of coercion towards mothers and fathers. In addition, they indicated that the detainees in Huixtla were expelled immediately and without following procedures to Tecun Uman in Guatemala.
For their part, the migrants stated that INM personnel took away their documents and belongings during the operation.
Faced with this situation, the Collective filed a complaint, folio 2021/81670, before the National Human Rights Commission, and an injunction to demand federal protection against acts depriving the liberty and physical integrity of the people who are in movement.
Now the migrants move in small groups along the roads. In response, the INM and the GN patrol the highway that leads from Huixtla to Escuintla trying to find the stragglers to stop them.
For his part, the head of the Diocese of Tapachula, Monsignor Jaime Calderon Calderon said that “the different levels of government came together to initiate a real manhunt, scaring, ambushing and dismantling the caravans, through the excessive use of force. With great, indiscriminate and unnecessary violence, they have knocked down and intimidated migrant brothers, especially women and children.”
