National: Mexico: 146 Journalists and Activists Murdered – Second Most Dangerous Country for Environmentalists

@ Avispa Midia

The Ministry of the Interior published the report “Offenses against Human Rights Defenders and Journalists”, where it was announced that so far during the AMLO government, 146 journalists and activists have been murdered. Of these cases, 47 concerned reporters and 94 human rights defenders.

The agency reported that of the murderers of journalists only, five have been sentenced while 89% remain in impunity. The states with the highest number of murdered activists are Guerrero with 21, Oaxaca with 14 and Chiapas with eight. In a press conference, Enrique Irazoque, head of the Unit for the Defense of Human Rights of the Ministry of the Interior, said that of the total number of the cases “only six were in the Protection Mechanism.”

For its part, the Global Witness agency published the report “Last Line of Defense” in which they compiled the cases of attacks against environmental activists in the last year and Mexico is consolidated, only after Colombia, as one of the most dangerous countries for environmental defenders. Half of these attacks were “directed against indigenous communities” and almost 95% “do not face any type of legal process.”

The agency also pointed to the responsibility of companies that “engage in an extractive economic model that overwhelmingly prioritizes profits over human rights and the environment”, and whose “irresponsible” power perpetuates the murder of defenders.
