Oaxaca: Ayuuk Teacher Detained for Opposing Interoceanic Corridor in her Territory

@ Pie de Pagina

On October 8th, members of the Federal Ministerial Police, in coordination with the National Guard, detained Ayuuk teacher Micaela Valdivieso Joaquin, and her son Ever Muñoz Valdivieso for defending their property from the works carried out as part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec Interoceanic Corridor (CIIT).

Accused “of the crime of opposition” they were arrested around 1:30 pm in Paso Real Sarabia, municipality of San Juan Guichicovi. From there, they were transferred to the Attorney General’s Office in Oaxaca. However, for her lawyer, this detention is a form of harassment and criminalization “so that they desist from their claims” since before the machinery entered their land, the teacher had sought an injunction “so it is thought that it is a form of retaliation against him for opposing said project”, said Pagina 3 media outlet.

The advisor of the Union of Indigenous Communities of the North Zone of the Isthmus (UCIZONI), Carlos Beas Torres, denounced that these arrests are part of the escalation of harassment against those who oppose the Interoceanic Corridor of the Isthmus (CIIT). In addition, within the framework of the resistance against the CIIT “a campaign of aggressions against social activists has been unleashed”,denounced Dagoberto Toribio Severo, president of the UCIZONI.

After being detained for 48 hours, the teacher and her son were released and declared in a video that these actions against her “do not bend me” and warned that “we are going to continue fighting (because) the only thing I tried was to defend a patrimony and that I am going to continue defending because this does not bend me.”
