On October 14th, the self-defense group El Machete released a letter in which it recalled that said group made up of “indigenous soldiers” that came to light last July did so to remove members of organized crime from Pantelho (“Los Herrera”) under the command of Dayli de los Santos Herrera Gutierrez, whom they point to as responsible for the murder of some 200 people.
It stressed that it does not have partisan purposes and that a commission of 20 people was created to represent the 86 communities and the different neighborhoods of the municipal seat, in addition the State Congress swore in the three members of the Municipal Council of the City Council of Pantelho, and that “now everyone is walking together to rebuild the municipality.” It clarified that they are not given orders but that Los Machetes are only “for the protection of the people against the hitmen.”
It also stated that Father Marcelo Perez Perez was by no means the founder of that group or gave orders to the members of the Self-Defense Forces. In fact, they didn’t even know him before the group appeared publicly and that the priest will begin to play a mediating role, it said.
It added that they will not allow the person who calls herself mayor, Raquel Trujillo Morales, to enter the municipality, because if she won, these they were not legitimate elections, because votes were bought and voters were threatened via the group “Dayli’s Hitmen” (Los Sicarios del Dayli) to vote for the PRD in that municipality.
The group asked the state and federal government to better investigate the criminal group of Dayli de los Santos Herrera Gutierrez, detained by the State Attorney General’s Office, accused of being the alleged intellectual author of the murder of the indigenous justice prosecutor, Gregorio Perez Gomez, in San Cristobal de Las Casas. In addition, it questioned who is the ex-military man who came to train the hitmen of the organized crime group “Los Herrera” and inquired into their protectors from the state capital, such as Cesar Espinosa Morales, one of the state leaders of the PRD in Chiapas .
