National: #ProtecciónNoContención Campaign Demands End to Repression of Migrants

Organizations, networks and collectives from Mexico and Central America launched the #ProtecciónNoContención (Protection Not Containment) campaign, an international call to end the repression, containment and deportation of people in need of protection by the Mexican State, the National Migration Institute (INM) and the National Guard (GN) as well as guaranteeing their right to request asylum or regularize their immigration status.

The campaign denounces the serious human rights violations committed against them before the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR). “In the last three years, the Mexican government has participated with the US government in actions to limit the protection of migrants and asylum seekers, outsourcing the borders of the United States, militarizing Mexican immigration policy and criminalizing those who seek protection.”

People are forced to leave their countries because there are no conditions that allow them to build a decent life. “Repression, insecurity, poverty, political instability, massive human rights violations, persecution by organized crime gangs, gender-based violence and natural disasters have forced people to displace.”

The lack of responses from the immigration and asylum authorities in Mexico have left migrants in Tapachula, mainly from Haiti, Venezuela and Central America, in limbo. They have been there for more than a year without job opportunities, access to health or education. When people have sought to leave Tapachula in search of job opportunities and minimum conditions for a dignified life, they have been violently repressed and detained by INM agents and the National Guard.

On October 26th, these serious human rights violations against migrants were denounced before the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) at the Official Hearing “Protection of Persons in Mobility in the United States, Mexico and North of Central America.”

Currently, a Caravan for Peace, with approximately three thousand migrants, is passing through Chiapas and should arrive in Oaxaca next week, Chiapas Paralelo reports.
