The Ministry of the Interior’s Protection Mechanism for Human Rights Defenders and Journalists has dealt with 1,506 cases in this administration: 495 journalists and 1,11 human rights defenders; although 138 murders have been registered, 99 percent are unpunished.

During his participation in the LVI assembly of the Mexican Federation of Public Human Rights Organizations, the head of the Mechanism, Enrique Irazoque, indicated that organized crime is among the main factors that cause these grievances.

He also mentioned impunity, corruption and collusion between authorities and criminal groups; the breach of the obligations that municipalities and states have in the matter; and the lack of culture about the importance of the work of journalists and human rights defenders.

“So far, there have been 47 murders of journalists, especially in Sonora, Guerrero and Veracruz; and 96 crimes against human rights defenders, the majority in Guerrero, Oaxaca and Chihuahua, with impunity rates of 91 and 99 percent”, according to La Jornada.

On November 2nd, within the framework of the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists, the National Human Rights Commission (CNDH) called on authorities and society in general to reflect and take action on the problem of violence towards communication professionals. Therefore, it called to defend and guarantee the right to freedom of expression. In Mexico, the latest murders were against Alfredo Cardoso and Fredy Lopez Arevalo, journalists from Guerrero and Chiapas, respectively.

“Impunity leads to more homicides and is often a symptom of the worsening conflict and the collapse of the law and judicial systems”, said UNESCO, expressing concern that “impunity harms entire societies by covering up serious abuses against civilians. human rights, corruption and crime.”
