This November 20th, 2021, within the framework of the 111th Anniversary of the Mexican Revolution, the Oaxacan Assembly in Defense of the Land and Territory, launched the campaign “It’s not Development – It’s Dispossession!”
They assured that it will be a permanent campaign of resistance and struggle to face the megaprojects and the militarization promoted by the 4T in Oaxacan territory.
In their statement, they refer to the violence and dispossession that is experienced in their communities as a result of the presence of megaprojects such as the Interoceanic Corridor, mining extraction and hydroelectric plants, among others.
“Today governments and companies intend to deprive us of our territories, natural assets and our community life. In all corners of the country and our state, large extractive mining, hydroelectric, industrial agriculture, refineries, gas pipelines, fracking, forestry, water privatization and the creation of sets of megaprojects and state policies are advancing that threaten our freedom. determination and our territories”, they declared.
Within the escalation of violence that link megaprojects and militarization, they pointed to the cases of the five activists murdered in Paso de la Reina in 2021 and denounced that there is no progress in the investigation or in terms of security for their relatives. They also mentioned that the increase in femicides in the region is alarming and emphasized the fact that women are an integral and fundamental part of their communities and of this movement, and that they will not allow them to continue to be violated.
Finally, they called on the Peoples at the national and global level to unite in the face of this threatening reality that haunts them. “We make an urgent call to the Peoples and organizations to strengthen our struggles and resistance, and turn our diversity into a source of unity to consolidate an increasingly forceful and firm social movement.”
