National: Migrant Caravan Arrives to Mexico City Following Confrontations with Police and National Guard

@ Norte Digital

After more than a month and a half on the road, the migrant caravan that left Tapachula in Chiapas reached its provisional destination: Mexico City. It arrived on Sunday night at the gates of the capital, where a strong police presence prevented their passage.

“It is something very hard, quite unexpected, because we did not expect so much aggression from the National Guard, from Migration”, one migrant lamented. But after  dialogue and the attention generated on social networks by the images of the police, the authorities agreed to allow the migrants to enter the capital.

Now, after 1,150 kilometers of distance traveled, approximately 320 migrants from Central America, including 75 minors, are in the Basilica of Guadalupe in Mexico City to rest and they hope to hold a meeting with the Ministry of the Interior and the Ministry of the Interior of CDMX to examine the conditions of their stay.

In a press conference, the head of Government of Mexico City, Claudia Sheinbaum, promised to “guarantee” the rights of migrants and ensure food, water and medicine for them. Likewise, she pointed out that the intention of the security forces was not to prevent entry to the city, but to allow it in an orderly fashion.

On the other hand, Irineo Mujica, a human rights defender and companion of the caravan, said that “the road has been very long, they have thrown everything at us but we are here now. It has been complicated and difficult.” In addition, he accused the authorities of having fought the caravan with “physical and psychological torture” on its way and denounced that the immigration policy of the Government of Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has been “the harshest of the last decade.”

For many of the migrants their journey does not end in Mexico City, they want to continue to the United States, although they know that the road “is going to get hotter” as they move north, as a 22-year-old migrant from Guatemala commented.
