On March 22nd, 2022, the Diocese of San Cristobal de Las Casas opened a new center that will provide care for refugees, asylum seekers and migrants. The center, inaugurated by the Migrant Pastoral Service (SEPAMI) of the Diocese of Los Altos de Chiapas and the United Nations (UN) Refugee Agency (UNHCR), which financed the construction in its entirety, will be able to accommodate up to 100 people, who will receive specialized services in legal and psychological matters.
The UNHCR stated that the site “will respond to the current needs that derive from the increase in forced displacement from the North of Central America and other countries of the American continent.” 90 percent of the refugees there are from Honduras, but also from Venezuela, Nicaragua, Ecuador and Guatemala, among others.
The UNHCR representative in Mexico, Giovanni Lepri, pointed out that the shelter “joins a very strong network of shelters in Mexico, which are the front line in the humanitarian response.” The agency dependent on the UN said that the Chiapas central corridor region is part of the route used by people fleeing their countries due to violence or persecution, and therefore, the association detected the need to strengthen the reception capacity in San Cristobal de Las Casas to accommodate people in decent and safe conditions.
The Bishop of San Cristobal, Rodrigo Aguilar Martinez, affirmed that the resources for support will come from the UNHCR and the city’s parishes will continue to support them, as will families who make contributions.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by Fr. Gonzalo Ituarte Verduzco, one of the main promoters; Mayor Mariano Diaz Ochoa and the head of the office of the National Human Rights Commission (CNDH), Martin Longoria, among others.
