On March 28th, under the rays of intense sun and heat, Las Abejas de Acteal Civil Society and the relatives of Simon Pedro Perez Lopez made a pronouncement outside the Control Courts, within the framework of the intermediate hearing in the case of Simon Pedro, to demand justice for the murder of the human rights defender.
Simon Pedro, a member of Las Abejas de Acteal, was murdered on July 5th, 2021 in the municipal seat of Simojovel, after denouncing the negligence of the Mexican State in the face of the unpunished actions of organized crime groups.
From civil society, the Fray Bartolome de las Casas Center for Human Rights (Frayba), international human rights monitoring organizations, the Swedish Movement for Reconciliation (SweFOR Mexico) and the International Service for Peace (SIPAZ), accompanied the intermediate hearing and peaceful action outside the Social Rehabilitation Center for Sentenced Persons No. 14 “El Amate”, in the municipality of Cintalapa.
Frayba presented 15 pieces of evidence in the case of the murder of Simon Pedro. However, the hearing for the offer and admission of evidence was deferred, because the defense of the accused material murderer of Simon Pedro seeks to reach an agreement through an abbreviated procedure. Human rights defenders and Simon Pedro’s family demanded from the Attorney General’s Office (FG) and the Judicial Power of the State of Chiapas (PJE) “that there be no omissions in the collection of evidence and in the follow-up of the logical lines of investigation according to Articles 8 and 25 of the American Convention on Human Rights, in such a way that not only the crime is investigated, but also the context in which it was carried out.”
Among the activities carried out outside the Control Courts, Las Abejas prayed in Tsotsil and then gave the floor to Juan Perez Gomez, father of Simon Pedro, and to Guadalupe Vazquez Luna, another member of Las Abejas and a survivor of the Acteal massacre. “I only ask that you do not leave me alone, that we walk together, that we build peace, and that true justice be done”, said Juan Perez. “Almost 25 years have passed since the Acteal massacre and we do not want it to be repeated (an injustice); That is why we demand that the relatives of Simon Pedro, his father, be respected, that they let him in, that they let him speak, but with his lawyer, because then they prevent a lawyer from entering with the victim’s relatives”, said Guadalupe Vazquez .
Frayba’s lawyer, Jorge Luis Hernandez, highlighted: “The murder of the human rights defender not only affects his nuclear family, but the entire society, because a clear message is sent: those who work in the defense of human rights are at high risk, just like journalists.” Violence in the northern region of Chiapas has increased critically in recent years.
