On April 6th, journalists protested to demand justice for the murders of journalists Heber Lopez and Gustavo Sanchez, during the dialogue held by the Mechanism for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders and Journalists in Juchitan, Oaxaca.
The Protection Mechanism summoned journalists and human rights defenders to a dialogue to promote a general law initiative for prevention and protection, given grievances against the union of communicators and activists.
The journalists spoke with banners with the slogan #PeriodismoEnRiesgo (#JournalismAtRisk), in solidarity with the journalists attacked in the region and demanding justice for the murdered communicators, as well as their families. Similarly, the journalist Jose Ignacio Santiago complained about the complete absence of investigation of the masterminds behind the murder of Heber Lopez in February 2022, and Gustavo Sanchez in June 2021.
For their part, members of the sexual diversity community requested their incorporation into the Mechanism and recalled that the murder of activist Oscar Cazorla remains unpunished.
Social organizations from the region such as Sol Rojo also demonstrated at the platform, exposing the human rights violations of activists and campesinos faced with the dispossession of their lands for the development of wind projects and the Tehuantepec Isthmus Interoceanic Corridor.
Oaxaca is the second state with the most beneficiaries of the Mechanism, with a total of 153 people, of whom 69 are women and 84 men.
