As the Mexican president announced on April 22nd in his morning conference, a meeting will be held with artists and activists who oppose the Mayan Train on Monday, April 25th, at the National Palace to provide them with information and to “talk with them”.
On April 20th, Mexican artists and activists from the “Save Me from The Train” campaign, such as Eugenio Derbez, Kate del Castillo and Natalia Lafourcade, who oppose the megaproject due to the environmental and cultural impacts that the train will have, accepted the president Lopez Obrador’s invitation to talk about Section 5 of the Maya Train. “I am going to invite them to see if we talk to see what their doubts are and I clarify them, to see if they accept and we talk, because it is ignorance, it is not bad faith. I don’t think they were paid, I think they believed the in destruction”, he explained, and also that “there is no damage to the environment, on the contrary, we are planting trees like never before (…)”
The artists and activists, accompanied by environmentalists, divers, biologists, academics and experts in the area, accepted the president’s invitation. “As we have pointed out, we have no other interest than the defense of the jungle, the conservation of the Mayan aquifer, its rivers and its caves; as well as the best development of the region. We are certain that we agree with you on these purposes”, the artists announced on social networks in a statement.
