In 2010, within the framework of the Humanitarian and Human Rights Observation Caravan in the vicinity of the indigenous community of San Juan Copala, Bety Cariño and Jyri Jaakkola, human rights defenders, were ambushed and killed. Today, 12 years later, their relatives continue to demand justice from an “indifferent” state and institutions that have perpetuated impunity. Authorities that have served to “stack up thousands and thousands of cases that do not find answers”, wrote Omar Esparza, widower of Bety Cariño and coordinator of the Zapatista Indigenous Agrarian Movement (MAIZ).
As on the 11th anniversary of this commemoration, members of MAIZ protested outside the Public Ministry Agency of the Attorney General’s Office in Huajuapan de Leon where they denounced the gradual release of those responsible for the attack on defenders, but also the lack of justice for other defenders assassinated in Oaxaca. “There is no justice for the people, nor for the displaced from Copala, nor for Bety Cariño, nor for the compañeras Felicita and Teresa. These justice institutions have no interest in resolving and have shown that the policy of the Mexican State is to perpetuate impunity”, said the MAIZ coordinator.
However, he recognized that throughout this struggle they have also witnessed the solidarity of the peoples. “During this journey, we also learned of the solidarity and embrace of the peoples in this struggle for dignity that sisters and brothers have shown us” and affirmed that the death of Bety Cariño “should be the seed to build true peace with the peoples.”
A year ago, the intentions of taking the case to the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACHR) were interrupted by the pandemic without being reactivated so far. “There is no longer another step in the instances of the federal government or in that of Oaxaca, with the Mexican State there is nothing to resolve. We limited all the necessary instances to achieve justice for 11 years”, Omar Esparza assured at the time.
