Two days before World Freedom of Press Day was celebrated, journalist Luis Enrique Ramirez Ramos, founder of the news portal Fuentes Fidedignas and columnist for the newspaper El Debate, was assassinated in Sinaloa.
With this nine journalists have been murdered so far this year. Different organizations have classified Mexico for a few months as the most dangerous country to practice this profession, even above those in declared war.
Some international organizations have shown concern and have urged the government of Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador to take measures to stop the violence and guarantee security and freedom of exercise. Civil society organizations, as well as the National Human Rights Commission, also condemned the murder of Luis Enrique Ramirez and called on the Protection Mechanism for Human Rights Defenders and Journalists to “urgently strengthen and expand its protection schemes.”
For its part, the Government of Mexico, through its spokesman Jesus Ramirez Cuevas, announced that they will work in collaboration with the government of Sinaloa to clarify the case and affirmed that there will be no impunity. He also pointed out that security measures for journalists will be reinforced.
