Oaxaca: Communities Affected by Mining Demand Response from AMLO

Communities and agrarian authorities that have been affected by the San Jose mining project and mining concessions in Zapotec territory demand an immediate response from the federal government, for which they sent a public letter addressed to President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador.

In said document they recalled that during the municipal and agrarian community assemblies they have firmly decided “not to allow any mining prospecting, exploration and exploitation work in our territories”, for which since 2015 the No to Mining for a Future All Front.

They also reminded the president that “at the beginning of this six-year term, you decreed the end of the neoliberal model, in addition to not granting any concessions to foreign companies. Neither of these two declarations has been fulfilled in the Central Valleys of Oaxaca, on the contrary, SEMARNAT granted the environmental permit and SEGOB is convening meetings of the communities with the mining company.”

“For 11 years, the Cuzcatlan mining company, a subsidiary of the Canadian Fortuna Silver Mines, has generated a climate of social tension, violence and serious environmental pollution in our region; during this period, the mining company has incurred in a series of violations of our fundamental rights and of the existing legislation in our country, all this with the support of state and federal governments”, they denounced.

The communities requested a hearing to address the effects caused by the San Jose mining project and the attacks by the Cuzcatlan mining company, “if there is no response to our request, we will take the necessary measures to guarantee respect for our right to self-determination, territory and a healthy environment”, they warned.
