National: Journalist Ernesto Mendez Murdered in Guanajuato


The journalist Ernesto Mendez, director of the digital medium Tu Voz was murdered last Tuesday while he was in a bar he owned. An armed gang burst into the place shooting, killing the journalist and three other people. “With Ernesto, there will be 13 murders of journalists in 2022, and at least nine related to their work. Therefore, we demand that the Mexican State act urgently to stop this phenomenon and we join in the pain of Ernesto’s family, friends and colleagues”, Article 19 said.

Article 19 confirmed that Ernesto Mendez had reported threats against his life, for which this organization made a call to the Special Prosecutor for Attention to Crimes Committed against Freedom of Expression (FEADLE), so that this is a line of investigation taken into account during the process that seeks to clarify what happened, bearing in mind that his informative work could be the motive for his murder.

Social and journalistic organizations express their concern about the alarming increase in murders of communicators in Mexico, they call for the protection of life and the free exercise of communication. Finally, Article 19 calls on the protection mechanism for human rights defenders and journalists to contact Ernesto’s family and colleagues in order to grant the necessary protection measures.
