On September 3rd, the plenary session of the Chamber of Deputies approved the initiative of President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador that grants the Ministry of National Defense total control of the National Guard with 264 votes in favor, 212 against, and one abstention. The project was turned over to the Senate of the Republic for its analysis and eventual ratification.
In accordance with the position defended by the groups of MORENA, the Green Ecologist Party of Mexico (PVEM) and the Labor Party (PT), the purpose of the initiative is to strengthen the institutional consolidation of the National Guard as a permanent, professional and disciplined body assigned to the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection, under the operational and administrative control of SEDENA.
The next day, a journalist asked Lopez Obrador why he had changed his mind, when during his campaign he made clear his opposition to militarization and promised to return the military to their barracks in six months. “I changed my mind, on seeing the problem that they left for me”, AMLO acknowledged.
Given this, various groups and organizations such as Amnesty International and Security Without War rejected militarization in Mexico. The Security Without War collective, which includes more than 300 organizations, called for an evening for peace, which took place on September 5th. They marched from the Angel of Independence to the Senate with slogans such as “Senator, Senator, do not betray the nation” and “Obrador, Obrador, you already seem like Calderon”, and painted slogans such as “Murderers”, “Your war, our dead” and “Militarization is not the solution.”
