Chiapas: Tseltal Women Released after Ten Months of Arbitrary Deprivation of Liberty

@Frayba

On October 27th, 2022, the organizations Fray Bartolome de Las Casas Center for Human Rights, Melel Xojobal C.A., Caritas San Cristobal de Las Casas C.A., and the Solidarity Legal Team reported that the Tseltal women from the northern area of the state of Chiapas, Isaura Velasco Garcia and Antonia Aguilar Solorzano, were released having been illegally detained for more than ten months.

Velasco and Aguilar were deprived of their liberty on December 15th and 16th, 2021, linked to a trial on the 23rd of the same month, when they were accused of probable responsibility in the crime of aggravated robbery.

In this sense, the Judicial Power of the State (PJE) of Chiapas determined, through a judge, the immediate release of the women, as they did not find evidence of the accusations. They were released and now they are together with their sons and daughters, so different organizations celebrate their freedom and send them greetings, adding “that they will continue to fight for the benefit of women because currently several of them are unjustly imprisoned”, Heraldo de Chiapas reports.

On the subject, Alejandro Encinas, Undersecretary of Human Rights, Population and Migration, indicated that the liberation of women, “is a joint effort of the Mechanism against Sexual Torture of Women of the Ministry of the Interior (SEGOB) and the PJE of Chiapas in favor of the human rights of women”, according to Chiapas Paralelo.
