With a cultural and political event at their headquarters (Cumbre Nachoj) on 24 June, the ejidatarios who adhere to the EZLN’s Sixth Declaration of the Lacandona Jungle in San Sebastián Bachajón recalled their comrade  Juan Vázquez Guzmán, who was murdered this April.  In a communique released with the end of commemoration in mind, as well as to launch the Week of Global Action “Juan Vázquez Guzmán lives, the struggle of Bachajón continues,” they denounced the Secretary of Governance, Noé Castañón, as the intellectual author of the murder of Vázquez Guzmán, emphasizing that they would continue to defend their territory.  They also denounced that the new ejidal commissar had been imposed by previous ejidal authorities and the state government.  The adherents to the Sixth Declaration also demanded the “immediate liberation of our comrade political prisoners Antonio Estrada Estrada, Miguel Vázquez Deara, and Miguel Demeza Jiménez, who have been unjustly incarcerated,” finding the government guilty of having fabricated crimes in these cases.

Chiapas: release of Miguel Vázquez Deara, adherent to the Sixth Declaration of the Lacandona Jungle from the ejido of San Sebastián Bachajón

On 26 June, Miguel Vázquez Deara, adherent to the a la Sixth Declaration of the Lacandona Jungle from the ejido of San Sebastián Bachajón, was released, having been arrested in September 2011 for the presumed crimes of armed robbery and criminal association.  He had been condemned to seven years and nine months imprisonment in November 2012.

In its informational bulletin published before this release, the Fray Bartolome de Las Casas Center for Human Rights (CDHFBC) denounced that his arrest had been “based in a fabricated charge made by officialists who are interested in the Agua Azul waterfalls; he was obliged under torture to sign a declaration of self-incrimination.  These acts whch seek to undermine the actions taken to defend the territory of the ejido of San Sebastián Bachajón by this adherent to the EZLN’s Sixth Declaration […] has a long-standing basis, going back several years.”

The CDHFBC noted that his case was symbolic, “one of the cases that reflect that in the state of Chiapas, the administration of justice is denied […] and there is a lack of adequate defense made for indigenous people; the application of the law does not accord with established legal principles, such as the presumption of innocence and, in this case particularly, the criminalization of those who organize in defense of their rights such as the right to land, self-determination, and autonomy.”

On 17 April, adherents to the Other Campaign of the Sixth Declaration of the Lacandona Jungle from San Sebastian Bachajón, Chilón municipality, published a new communique in which they recall their struggle and evaluate the former state administration of Juan Sabines Guerrero.  They denounce the impunity of looting and a justice system that serves the State, one that has allowed their ejido to experience “looting of territory and imposition of a control-point at the entrance of the Agua Azul cascades, removed from residents.”  They reiterated their desire to resist looting and to free their prisoners Antonio Estrada Estrada, Miguel Vázquez Deara, and Miguel Demeza Jiménez, “victims of the authorities for their lack of capacity and independence to apply the law.” They greeted others, who have also been imprisoned for raising their voice.  They recognized Alberto Patishtán Gómez in particular: “With a simple heart, and humble in his words, [he is] a great comrade that they sought to silence with the walls of political prison.  He will always be present in our slogans and in the process of our struggle.”
