Oaxaca: CODEDI denounces military harassment; CNI demands that the repression against its members stop

November 4, 2018

In a statement, the Committee for the Defense of Indigenous Rights (CODEDI) denounced that on the afternoon of October 29,
“another act of aggression was recorded” against its members, “when elements of the Military Navy went up in convoy to the Center of Training of the former Finca Alemania in the Zapotec southern sierra ».

It explained that this “military provocation” took place “while hundreds of members of CODEDI were carrying out a mobilization in front of the Huatulco airport, Oaxaca, to demand justice for the 5 community defenders murdered so far this year and to investigate who is to be held accountable for the death of Mardelia Rocibel Cervantes, 22, deceased due to medical malpractice in the hospital of Huatulco”. The CODEDI considered that these more recent events are “an intimidation against the right of demonstration of the people and makes clear the complicity between the state apparatuses and the hitmen of the organized crime”.

It should be remembered that, just on October 25, Noel Castillo Aguilar, 44, a member of CODEDI and
“defender of the beach in his community against mafia and business interests” became the fifth member of this organization killed in 2018, No progress has been recorded in the investigations in any of the cases.

The National Indigenous Congress (CNI) denounced for its part “the growing repression against our brothers from CODEDI” and condemned the murder of Noel Castillo Aguilar. It demanded that the repression and the imposition of “megaprojects of death” cease.

Chiapas/Mexico: Invitation to the Second National Assembly of the National Indigenous Congress (CNI) and the Indigenous Governing Council (CIG)

September 18, 2018

The National Indigenous Congress (CNI) and the Indigenous Governing Council (CIG), convened their second national assembly, to be held from October 11 to 14 in San Cristóbal de Las Casas, Chiapas.

“Our walk continues. And the fundamental difference with the previous stages is that now we are more indigenous peoples walking together, and, most importantly, we are more people, groups, collectives and organizations willing to find in ourselves the solutions that, we know, will never come from above” , they said.

The communiqué continues: “Every day that passes, the capitalist war grows more against the mother earth, our peoples and all those below. From above, the capitalists and their overseers who govern badly Mexico and the world, we don’t receive anything but lies, exploitation, dispossession, contempt and repression”.

In a communiqué signed by the Coordination and Follow-up Commission of the CIG / CNI, they explained that during the meeting they will make a balance and assessment of the last stage of their struggle, of the current situation in Mexico and the world, and from there they will decide “the steps we must take in our struggle as CNI and CIG, together with the Support Networks to the CIG, the national and international supporters of Sixth Declaration of the Lacandon Jungle, and all those who decided to support the proposal of the CIG“.

Chiapas: EZLN and members of the National Indigenous Congress (CNI) united against the plundering of their peoples

August 29, 2014

Between August 4 and 9, there was held in La Realidad, municipality of Las Margaritas, the “First Exchange between the Zapatista Peoples and the Native Peoples of Mexico”. 1,300 Zapatista delegates and over 300 indigenous representatives from different groups of the National Indigenous Congress (CNI) participated. On Saturday 9, they issued a declaration regarding the agreements of the Exchange to national and international adherents of the Sixth Declaration of the Lacandona Jungle and a new Declaration on the plundering of indigenous peoples was read. It is signed by the EZLN and 28 groups of the CNI that participated in the meeting.

In the act of closure, they emphasized that: “the current political leaders are delivering territories and assets designated for the nation to the large domestic and foreign companies, seeking the death of all the peoples of Mexico and of Mother Earth”. The enemy, they reported, is the dispossession “that has a single name, and that name is capitalism.”

At the same time, through the reading of “29 Mirrors”, different situations of dispossession of indigenous peoples from across the country, as well as their experiences of struggle, rebellion and resistance were shared. In addition, they said: “These are the plunders that we suffer, we know ourselves in an emergency that threatens our lives. So today we say to the powerful, to the companies and bad governments led by the criminal supreme leader of the paramilitaries Enrique Peña Nieto that we won’t surrender, we won’t sell out, and we won’t give up. […] Like the corn, today we will renew ourselves in our decision to build from below and to the left a world where there is room for many worlds”.

Finally they informed that between December 2014 and January 2015 they will organize the “First World Festival of Resistance and Rebellions against Capitalism.”

In a communiqué on May 29, Subcomandante Insurgente Moisés, spokesperson for the Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN), announced the new dates and the place for the exchanges between the Zapatistas and the indigenous peoples of the National Indigenous Congress (CNI). This event had been suspended in earlier dates due to the murder of Zapatista support base “Galeano” in La Realidad in May.

The meeting will take place from 4 to 9 of August in the Zapatista “Caracol” of La Realidad (Chiapas), and will not be open to the general public. “The exchange is only between the Zapatista people and the National Indigenous Congress. No one else will be allowed in, not even the independent press or compas from the Sixth Declaration.” However, “the session on resolutions and agreements from the exchange is open to compas from the sixth and the independent press.”

Finally, complementing another communiqué entitled “Condolences,” the EZLN announced that the event with the CNI will be named “David Ruiz Carcía.” David was a ñhañú indigenous from the community of Xochicuatla, in the State of Mexico, and a member of the CNI, who died following an accident suffered while coming back from the tribute to murdered Zapatista “Galeano,” held on May 24 in La Realidad: “This Compañero David did not die while on some vacation trip, but because he was fulfilling his duty on the mission given to him by the compañeras and compañeros of his community and of the National Indigenous Congress. This mission was to accompany us as Zapatistas in our homage to our Compa Galeano. That is why we have decided to honor the memory of this compañero by giving the first exchange between the Indigenous Peoples of Mexico and the Zapatista people his name.”

Subcomandante Moisés, on behalf of the EZLN, offered condolences to the family, the peoples and the CNI companions of the deceased.

Chiapas: Third International Seminar for Reflection and Analysis “…Planet Earth: antisystemic movements”

January 8, 2013

3er Seminario CIDECI @ SIPAZ

For the third consecutive year, there was held the Third International Seminar for Reflection and Analysis “…Planet Earth: antisystemic movements” at the Indigenous Center for Comprehensive Training (CIDECI), also known as Unitierra Chiapas, in San Cristóbal de Las Casas.  Some 600 local, national, and international persons met at this seminar to hear different speakers on 30 and 31 December 2012 and 1 and 2 January 2013.  During the day and night sessions, speakers were distributed by 2 or 3 per session, and included such notables as Silvia Ribeiro, Gustavo Esteva, Jean Robert, Pablo González Casanova, and Silvia Pérez-Vitoria, among other intellectuals and theorists.  Other panelists arrived from Argentina, Ecuador, Chile, and the U.S. to share the historical processes of social movements they have accompanied and led.  Representatives of the National Indigenous Congress (CNI), comprised of the 54 ethnicities of Mexico, also formed part of the panelists who were invited to the event, and they greeted the Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN) for the 19th anniversary of its 1994 insurrection. For this reason, between the night of 31 December and 1 January, members of the EZLN met at the five Good-Government Councils located in five municipalities of the Jungle, Highlands, Northern, Border, and Jungle regions of the state of Chiapas, to recall and celebrate the 19 years since 1994.

Luis Villoro and Fernanda Navarro sent a letter of apology for not having been able to attend the seminar, mentioning the silent march carried out by Zapatistas in 5 Chiapas cities on 21 December: “following this silence they invite us and incite us to carry their word so as to show what they have accomplished by resisting and building a word in which everything that has life be loved and respected.”
