During the night of 18 May, the security guard who was working in the offices of the El Sur newspaper was attacked by two armed men, who insistently asked him about the “manager” of the paper. El Sur presented a denunciation before the Public Ministry to register the attack and act of intimidation. According to the declaration, a week previously, a white Tsuru vehicle lacking plates had been installed some meters from the office’s location.

During the first few days of May, corresponding to the launch of electoral campaigns, Article 19, which favors freedom of speech, documented an attack on journalists each 10.6 hours in Mexico. Guerrero is the most violent state in these terms, having registered 16 of the 34 cases that have been denounced.

Oaxaca: Opponents to wind-energy projects threatened with death in the Isthmus

March 2, 2014

apii-dtt-jpegThe Assembly of Indigenous Peoples of the Tehuantepc Isthmus in Defense of Land and Territory (APIIDTT) has denounced the death-threat received by relatives of one of its members, Pedro Martínez Guerra, on 28 February.

Pedro Martínez and his relatives have spent several days now protecting their property to avoid the passage of workers from Fenosa Natural Gas, who have built a path and a wind-tower without the consent of the communards of the land.  For this reason a penal denunciation for looting has been submitted to the Public Ministry.

The multinational Fenosa Natural Gas is building a wind-energy park in the Juchitán municipality which has provoked a strong opposition movement from residents of the zone who denounce the construction of the park on communal lands and the lack of previous, free, and informed consent, which should be secured in these types of projects that affect indigenous peoples, according to international laws signed by Mexico.

Chiapas: Ejidatarios of Bachajón denounce kidnapping of youth

November 14, 2013

imagesEjidatarios of San Sebastián Bachajón, Chilón municipality, have denounced the kidnapping of a youth from the Xanil community in the same ejido.  The crime took place on 5 November, when four individuals took Herminio Estrada Gómez, 18 years of age.  The ejidatarios who adhere to the Sixth Declaration of the Lacandona Jungle indicated that “to date they have cut off our contact with him and so we do not know if he is experiencing good [or bad] physical and health conditions; they also refuse to hand him over to the Public Ministry–in case they are accusing him of a crime–but yes they are demanding money for his release.”  In recent days, the ejidatarios have been threatened and harassed by officialist ejidal authorities.  They have identified several persons as supposed kidnappers and have indicated them as being associated with other violent acts.  They mentioned that they “participated in an armed group which displaced our comrades from the control point on 2 February 2011.”
