National: National Guard will be integrated into SEDENA: Sheinbaum

On June 23^rd, president-elect Claudia Sheinbaum gave a press conference at her transition home during which she spoke about the reform proposed by current president Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, which consists of the National Guard being definitively integrated into the Secretariat of National Defense (SEDENA).

“The National Guard, in just five years, already has the recognition of the people of Mexico. It is up to us, as of October 1^st, to continue strengthening and consolidating the National Guard as part of the Secretariat of National Defense, with the constitutional reform that is on the horizon in the Congress of the Union.”

She pointed out that the security policy of her government will consist of attention to the causes, having bigger and better National Guard, intelligence and investigation, and coordination between institutions.

Some civil society organizations have expressed their concerns in this regard since they affirm that “the participation of the military in areas of civilian life could violate the security of the population and increase human rights violations in addition to putting at risk the principle of separation of powers and judicial independence.’’

Given this, they have called on the president-elect to reconsider this initiative.
